You might have heard of activated carbon, but what is it exactly? Activated carbon is a material that has an enormous capability to adsorb molecules and toxins. It’s used in a number of different applications from water filtration and air purification to medicines and environmental protection. But how does it work? And how does it affect our world?

Activated carbon is used for several purposes including water filtration, air purification, and even in medicines. The material is typically made from coal or other organic material like wood. This material is heated up and then processed with steam or chemicals to make it more porous, which allows it to work better.

Activated carbon can be found around the world in many different forms. There’s activated powdered charcoal which is used as a filter; there are also activated carbon cloths which are often used for environmental protection; and there are even filters made from activated carbon blocks that are used in medicine.

How does it work?

Activated carbon is produced from organic material. When this material is heated in a slight vacuum, it causes the atoms to open up and create lots of spaces for harmful molecules and toxins to stick to. This process is called “carbonization.” Activated carbon’s ability to adsorb molecules and toxins makes it an important part of many technologies.

The benefits of activated carbon?

Activated carbon is an excellent tool in many applications. In fact, it’s been used since the 1800s to treat diseases such as malaria and cholera. However, it’s also used for other purposes, such as water purification and air filtration. Activated carbon filters eliminate microorganisms and odours from water through adsorption or absorption. It’s also used in many industries such as oil production, chemical processing, pharmaceuticals, and more.  The benefits of activated carbon are numerous. From medical treatments to industrial uses, activated carbon has a wide range of applications. It can be used for water treatment like removing organic impurities from drinking water or gas treatment in natural gas processing plants. Carbon is also essential for filtering out pollutants from the air we breathe on a daily basis. Air filtration systems that use activated carbon are readily available at home improvement stores as well, so you can always have clean air to breathe!

For the most part, activated carbon could be found all over the world! You can find it in filters, scrubbers, toothpaste, and even in some medicines. It’s because activated carbon adsorbs molecules and toxins so well that it’s often used to remove organic chemicals from the environment or even from our water.
